A Busy Morning at Nunawading Christian College
Our journey to Nunawading threw us a little curveball this morning—roadworks slowed us to a crawl right in the middle of peak hour traffic! But we made it to our accommodation, and it was all hands on deck. We quickly parked and disconnected the vans, and Glenda dashed up to the school to sort out where Bubsie would go and get the team signed in.
All Hands on Deck
The rest of the team arrived just in time to set up Bubsie in the school quadrangle. Tarenne, one of the chaplains, got the VIP treatment with a ride right into the quad! The chaplains and maintenance staff were absolute legends, helping us get the gazebo up and everything in place. Pastor Jared Smith joined us too, and with a few minutes to spare before the students arrived, everyone wanted a turn at cranking the car. The excitement was contagious!
Recess Rush
When the recess bell rang, it was like opening the floodgates! Students poured out to see Bubsie, their eyes wide with curiosity. We chatted with them and handed out copies of “The Overlander”—it was wonderful seeing their enthusiasm.
Chapel Time: The Great Car Quiz
After recess, it was time for Chapel, and we kicked things off with a Car Quiz to test the students’ automotive knowledge. You should have seen their faces when we asked, “When was the first speeding ticket given in Australia?” One by one, they dropped out until we revealed the surprising answer: 1908!
Kevin had the PowerPoint ready to go, and after a fun interview, he shared the incredible story of the first car to go “Right Around Australia.” The students were captivated!
Sharing the Journey
While the students were engaged in Chapel, Glenda and Veronica made sure the staff didn’t miss out, handing them copies of “The Overlander” with QR cards tucked inside. As the students filed out afterward, we offered them books too—and walked away having shared about 160 copies! What a response!
Joy Rides and New Friends
With Chapel wrapped up, our wonderful helpers pitched in again to pack everything down in record time. Then came the fun part—giving rides! A couple of staff members got their turns first, and then we finally met Principal Megan James. She’d been delayed dealing with a situation at the office, so a ride in Bubsie was exactly what she needed to turn her morning around. You could see the stress melt away as we took her for a spin!
Aaron, the other chaplain, also hopped in for some laps around the carpark. After everyone had their fill of vintage car joy, we loaded Bubsie back into the trailer and headed to our base carpark.
Another School, Another Success
What started with traffic delays ended with smiling faces, meaningful connections, and 160 books shared.
Grateful for the warm welcome at Nunawading Christian College and all the hands that helped make today special.
