Journey Preparation and Accommodation
Following thorough trailer maintenance, the team convoyed from Rockhampton to Gladstone, establishing base operations in the Gladstone Church car park. The church community’s generous accommodation provision continues to demonstrate the valuable support network available throughout the journey.
Comprehensive Event Coordination
Pastor Horace Evans, Sandra, and dedicated church members orchestrated an impressive community gathering featuring the Gladstone Vintage Car Club, commercial food services via ‘Junc Truck’, children’s entertainment through bouncy castle provision, and promotional booths for program materials and literature distribution.
Vintage Vehicle Showcase
The car club’s arrival with exceptional vintage specimens created an impressive automotive display, highlighted by a 1924 Essex identical to Nevill’s second journey vehicle. This historical connection provided visitors with tangible links between past and present automotive heritage.
Political and Community Engagement
Local MP Glen Butcher attended with PA Paris, both demonstrating genuine interest and positive reception of the display. Their presence reinforced the journey’s broad community appeal and political recognition.
Substantial Outreach Results
Approximately 100 visitors circulated through various booths, with distribution of 80 “Overlander” booklets and numerous program cards indicating strong community engagement. The team’s collaborative knowledge sharing enhanced visitor education through complementary expertise.
Memorable Individual Encounters
Particularly moving interactions included an enthusiastic young traveller amazed by Nevill’s historical achievements, and a wheelchair-bound former train driver whose physical limitations couldn’t contain his excitement when experiencing Bubsie’s horn and photography opportunities.
Weather Resilience
Unexpected wet weather failed to diminish enthusiasm, with available shelter facilitating extended conversations that continued into evening hours. The team’s adaptability and visitor dedication demonstrated the event’s meaningful impact despite challenging conditions.
