Community Outreach: A Day of Connection in Adelaide’s Northern Suburbs
The day began with clear blue skies despite the cool morning temperature following a crisp night. We were grateful for the fine weather as we embarked on our packed schedule across multiple locations in Adelaide’s northern communities.
Our first stop was at a community center in Davoren Park, where several local organizations share facilities. When we arrived, volunteers were operating a food bank, and shortly after, a craft group gathered for their activities. After discussions with our local contact Honore, we adjusted our original plans and decided to showcase Bubsie at a nearby park instead of attempting to navigate a busy shopping center.
Fremont Park Exhibition
We traveled to Fremont Park where Honore and Louise had identified an ideal location for our display. The newly designed ramp system on our trailer made unloading our restored classic car, Bubsie, significantly easier than previous outings. We did notice a small area where paint had been rubbed off the car’s door during transport—a minor repair for our to-do list.
The park was bustling with visitors—dog walkers, caregivers with their clients, and parents with young children in strollers. We enjoyed engaging with the diverse community members who expressed interest in Bubsie. Later, a group who had been attending an educational session elsewhere joined us at the park, providing more opportunities for meaningful conversations and photo opportunities.
Community Shop Visit
Upon recommendation, we relocated to a local community shop and café in Smithfield Plains. The staff welcomed us warmly and allowed us to display Bubsie outside their entrance. The trailer, positioned strategically along the edge of the parking lot, served as effective advertising to passing traffic. Several curious drivers pulled in specifically to view the car and receive information about the Right Around Australia project. As the lunchtime rush subsided and the shopping complex quieted down, we took the opportunity to have our own lunch before deciding to return to the more populated park.
Afternoon Engagement
Back at Fremont Park, we continued our community engagement, though the afternoon crowd was noticeably smaller than the morning’s. During quieter periods, I managed to book ahead for caravan parks for our upcoming travel segments and caught up on correspondence.
By mid-afternoon, we returned to the community center in Davoren Park. We positioned Bubsie prominently near the entrance gate while setting up the main hall for our presentation about our journey and restoration project. Pieter and Veronica were delighted to reconnect with some acquaintances who had come specifically to see the car.
After showcasing the vehicle and taking numerous photos with the attendees, many of whom were from the local African community, we conducted our presentation on the restoration journey. The evening concluded with a wonderful community meal where we shared stories and built new friendships. A particularly heartwarming moment was reconnecting with Brigitte, who had been part of our community in Hamilton, NSW back in 2010 when she first arrived in Australia with her young family.
It was a fulfilling day of community connection and sharing centenary of the first person to drive Right Around Australia, with interested individuals across Adelaide’s northern suburbs.
