Right Around Australia – Journey to South Hedland
Early Morning Departure
Today began with an early start as we set off for South Hedland, aiming to arrive by noon. However, the journey proved more challenging than anticipated due to persistent side winds and headwinds that slowed our progress considerably.
Road Challenges
The route took us along highways busy with road trains and several wide loads, requiring us to pull off the road multiple times to allow these massive vehicles to pass safely. These necessary stops, combined with the challenging wind conditions, extended our travel time significantly.
Fuel Stop Strategy
About halfway through our journey, three of our vehicles needed diesel top-ups from jerry cans – a reminder of the distances between fuel stops in this remote part of Australia.
Arrival and Setup
Roger reached the shopping centre right on schedule, with Kevin and Glenda arriving approximately 30 minutes later. The local organising team was patiently waiting for us, though we all had to wait for the Bubsie trailer to complete the convoy. They arrived around 1:30 pm, allowing us to have everything set up in the shopping centre car park by 2 pm.
Community Engagement
While the display started quietly, it wasn’t long before curious shoppers and locals began stopping to learn more about Bubsie and our journey around Australia. The interest steadily built throughout the afternoon.
Special Family Reunion
A highlight of the day was Desiree’s joy at reuniting with her sister Michelle and brother-in-law Ron, along with their travelling companions Trish and Shane. This team are making their own adventure, travelling in the opposite direction to our team, making for a wonderful impromptu rendezvous in South Hedland.
Evening Accommodation
After wrapping up our display just after 5 pm, we checked into Black Rock Holiday Park, where we’ll be staying for the next two nights.
Tomorrow’s Plans
Another early morning awaits us tomorrow as we prepare for the journey to Marble Bar – continuing our exploration of Western Australia’s remarkable Pilbara region.
