Katherine Community Display – Right Around Australia
Market Display Success
The Right Around Australia team positioned Bubsie at the Katherine Markets by 8:30 AM, immediately engaging with early morning visitors and sharing the project story. The market organiser created promotional video content for social media platforms, which reportedly contributed to increased attendance throughout the day.
Team Arrivals and Technical Preparations
Glenda and Kevin joined the display at 10:00 AM, followed by Pieter and Veronica’s arrival at 11:00 AM from Darwin. During the morning session, Warren collaborated with Darryl Kent and later with Pieter to conduct essential adjustments on Bubsie ‘B’ – our backup vehicle used for filming and specialised touring activities. This secondary vehicle will undertake separate Australian touring segments with dedicated volunteer teams.
Historical Recreation and Filming
Roger navigated Bubsie along the historic railway tracks while Glenda captured footage for the project documentation. This location holds particular significance as it represents the route from Eumangulan, where Nevill originally caught the train to Darwin to purchase replacement tyres during his historic journey. Interestingly, only motorcycle tyres were available at the time, but they proved sufficient for his continued travel to Toowoomba.
Railway Heritage Engagement
The team had arranged to photograph Bubsie alongside the historic railway exhibit, though access complications arose when the scheduled contact couldn’t locate the facility key. However, this challenge transformed into an unexpected opportunity when several vintage car enthusiasts and the editor of a veteran car magazine arrived to view the display.
Visitor Centre Relocation
The team relocated to the visitor centre, where additional vintage car enthusiasts had gathered after learning about the project’s presence in Katherine. This impromptu gathering created valuable networking opportunities and increased community engagement with the Right Around Australia initiative.
Afternoon Activities and Departure
As afternoon temperatures rose and visitor numbers naturally decreased by 3:00 PM, the team refuelled Bubsie and returned to their accommodation base. The timing allowed for continued technical work on the backup vehicle while maintaining efficient resource management.
Technical Challenges and Supply Issues
The technical team continued troubleshooting Bubsie ‘B’ throughout the afternoon, though the desired results weren’t achieved. The work has been postponed until morning, when fresh perspectives and optimal conditions will facilitate problem-solving efforts.
Logistical Considerations
The team discovered that expected supply deliveries to Katherine had not arrived as scheduled. Morning investigations will determine the current location of these materials, and the team’s departure timeline may require adjustment to ensure both technical and supply issues are resolved before continuing the journey.
Project Continuity
These operational challenges represent typical aspects of large-scale touring projects, and the team’s adaptive approach ensures both primary and backup vehicles will be fully operational for their respective touring missions across Austr
