Exploring Meckering and Engaging with St. Mary’s School
Departure from Maida Vale and Stop in Meckering
Team 2 left Maida Vale at 8:15 AM, heading east. They went through the town of Meckering, where they stopped for a break and walked around the park. They learned about the 1968 earthquake and how it affected the area, which was considered the most devastating earthquake in Australia, though thankfully, no lives were lost.
Lunch in Merredin and Arrival at St. Mary’s School
After lunch in Merredin, the team made their way to St. Mary’s School, where the children were on their lunch break. They unloaded the car, and Warren took the local pastor, Ben, for a drive to give Bubsie a run.
Addressing a Mechanical Issue
The car was running rough, so while waiting for the school children to be ready, Warren checked the motor and discovered dirt in the carburettor, likely due to dirty fuel.
Engaging with the Students
The children were eventually ready to start coming in their classes by 1:30 PM, with 4 groups of 20-30 primary-aged students. They were very interested and asked lots of questions. Just as the team was about to drive to the next event, an older class came running to see Bubsie, so they told the story and gave the students time to ask questions.
Departure from the School
The team left the school at 3:30 PM.
Tuesday: 17 June continued
Visiting the Aged Care Facility and Engaging the Community
Arrival at Merredin Aged Care Facility
Warren drove the car from the school to the Aged Care Facility, where he went inside and told 10-12 residents the story of Bubsie. They were then invited outside to see the car for themselves.
Reminiscing with the Residents
There was much talk of yesteryear when the residents were younger. One 101-year-old lady was very interested in the car and shared the story of how her sister showed a taxi driver how to mend a puncture.
Joining Forces with a Vintage Car
Another vintage car, a 1925 Rugby Tourer, joined the display at the Aged Care Facility. Members of the public on the street also stopped to admire Bubsie.
Distributing the Overlander Book
All the residents were presented with the Overlander book before the team left the home just after 4 PM.
Tuesday: 17 June, last stop
Concluding the Day in Merredin with a Community Display
Driving Through Town to the Community Resource Centre
At 4:30 PM, Warren drove Bubsie through town to the Community Resource Centre. He followed the wrong grey car, which delighted the locals as he drove through the town.
Welcoming Community at the Resource Centre
There was a small group waiting for us, and again, the 1925 Rugby Tourer was on display. The team was delighted to see the support of the ministers’ fraternal members from the town.
Departure and Hospitality at the Willis Farm
The team left town at 5:30 PM to follow their hosts, Malcolm and Sharelle Willis, to their farm. The Willis family were lovely hosts.
