School & Church Displays | Prospect SA
Tuesday: 6 May
Prescott College & Prospect Church Display @ Prospect SA
Morning Preparations
Our display today was not scheduled to start until midday, affording us a productive morning. We utilized this time answering emails, developing PowerPoints for upcoming presentations, cleaning the van, preparing lunches, and finalizing route plans.
Supply Challenges Resolved
We encountered a minor setback when the paint shipment expected yesterday via DHL was refused transit. Quickly implementing our backup plan, Warren made a trip to Renmark where he successfully acquired both the needed paint and the artwork for the trailer’s rear section.
Travel and Setup
En route to Prospect International Church, we made a strategic stop in Blair Athol to take advantage of lower fuel prices. Upon reaching the church parking lot, we followed Principal Ian Hamilton’s directions, unloading Bubsie and positioning her beneath trees in the school’s rear playground area.
After completing the required school sign-in procedures, we established our display with assistance from Darlene, who also provided refreshments for the students. With setup complete, we enjoyed our lunch in the pleasant shade while awaiting the afternoon activities.
Student Engagement
As students began to arrive, we shared information about Bubsie. During their lunch break, many took the opportunity to examine the vehicle up close. Following this initial viewing, a student group attended a scheduled presentation where we shared the complete story and answered their questions. The session concluded with refreshments including chocolate crackles, watermelon, and drinks.
Valuable Connections
Pastor Justin Strauss visited during our display, bringing additional supplies. We distributed copies of our story to staff members, teachers, and the school library. After packing our materials, we waited for student buses to depart before loading Bubsie back into the trailer and completing the sign-out process. History and Religion teacher Jake particularly enjoyed experiencing a ride in Bubsie.
Personal Reflections
The day held special significance for Glenda, who attended this school 58 years ago. She appreciated seeing how the campus has expanded and developed over the decades. The visit also provided a welcome opportunity to reconnect with a former classmate and several members of the Mattner family, including Craig and his nephew Jeremy who currently teach at the school.
Our return journey to base progressed somewhat slower than usual due to heavy traffic, but concluded a successful and rewarding day of community engagement.
