Secondary School & Community Displays | Mackay Qld
Friday: 8 August
Carlisle Adventist College – Secondary
Weather Conditions and Setup
Despite heavy overnight rainfall raising concerns about outdoor display logistics, morning conditions cleared favourably for the secondary school presentations. The improved weather, including periods of sunshine, ensured optimal conditions for student engagement with Bubsie.
Middle School Engagement
The morning commenced with chapel presentations for grades 7-9 students, who demonstrated focused attention throughout the historical narrative. Student questions reflected genuine curiosity about the journey, with several requesting copies of “The Overlander” for personal reading.
Senior Student Presentations
Pre-lunch sessions with grades 10-12 students maintained the high engagement standards, with attentive participation and strong interest in both publication offerings. The mature audience showed particular appreciation for the comprehensive materials available, including requests for “God’s Rescue Plan” copies.
Early Learning Integration
The program concluded with a special visit from Early Learning Centre children, who, despite their young age, demonstrated exemplary behaviour during the presentation. Their enthusiastic response to Bubsie’s distinctive horn created memorable moments for both students and presenters.
Educational Partnership Success
Carlisle Adventist College’s comprehensive age-group programming provided exceptional educational outreach opportunities. The institution’s support and student engagement across all year levels reinforced the value of structured educational presentations in the community tour strategy.
Friday: 8 August
Richie’s Engineering Workshop
Team Division and Logistics
Following completion of the college presentations, the team strategically divided responsibilities, with some members attending to personal preparations while others conducted an additional outreach opportunity in Mackay’s industrial sector.
Industrial Setting Contrast
Bubsie’s positioning at Richie’s Engineering Services created a striking visual contrast, with the vintage vehicle appearing diminutive alongside massive mining truck bodies under construction. Despite the scale difference, Bubsie’s centenary heritage gained respect and attention from workshop personnel.
Workplace Engagement
The industrial setting provided unique access to workers who might not typically encounter historical automotive displays. This specialised audience showed genuine interest in Nevill’s pioneering story, with several accepting informational materials during their break periods.
Team Expansion and Preparation
The day concluded with team reunification and preparation activities. Bruce and Maxine Hill’s arrival from Townsville marked a significant team expansion for the upcoming Mackay to Brisbane segment, bringing additional expertise and support to the journey.
Evening Fellowship
The team shared an evening meal that served dual purposes of nourishment and relationship building with new members. This social integration time proved valuable for establishing working relationships and communication patterns for the extended journey ahead.
