School visitation | Hurstville NSW
It was a delight to visit the school in Hurstville today. We had left early this morning at 6.45 am in order to have plenty of time to travel from Galston to Hurstville and arrive by 8.00 am. We knew that the very narrow street that the school is on would become very congested in the middle of school drop-off times.
We had a good run across and negotiated the traffic down Wright St with our car and trailer. Turning up the driveway between the church and the school, we drove into the play area behind the school assembly pavilion and unloaded the car.
We were very happy to meet the deputy principal, Daniel Taylor, whom we had known many years ago in New Zealand. The car was positioned under the covered eating area around the play area, and then we signed in and set up the display.
The two chaplains, Fabian Edian and Renee Vaovasa made us very welcome, and we all went down to the assembly area for chapel which was led by the Grade 2 class and what a great job they did in leading the singing. It was fantastic to see the little ones thoroughly enjoying the singing and enthusiastically entering all the actions. Kevin Amos told the story of the Bubsie trip in 1925 using many of the photos Nevill took as a record of his adventure. It was nice also to meet the pastor of the Chinese church in the area – Pastor Robert.
We had the classes come to view Bubsie every few minutes and explained some of the car’s unique features. For the older ones, we were also able to show them how it started with the crank. Fabian was also able to get it started by cranking it.
The Home and School Association was holding a fundraiser, and children had brought along a $2 coin to purchase a small cupcake. Most were decorated with a little label displaying the Right Around Australia logo. After the classes had seen Bubsie, asked all their questions and had a class photo taken, they lined up to get their “Bubsie”-themed cupcakes.
Unfortunately, Years 5 & 6 missed out on the event as they had a clash with another training program on that day, but it was a good day overall with around 135 students able to view the car. Teachers, staff and visiting parents were given a copy of “The Overlander”. The activity sheet was also made available to the teachers of each class. A copy of The Overlander and God’s Rescue Plan was also given to the school library.
We packed up, loaded Bubsie into the trailer and then left the car and trailer in the driveway of the school and went out for lunch with the chaplains. Thank you for this time to share more with you and get to know you a little more.
Returning to our base at Galston, we were able to catch up on some phone calls for planning for the upcoming events over the next few weeks from Wollongong to Melbourne, do some washing and upload the photos of the day to our social media and Blog page.
Today was the first day when the whole team had worn their hooded sweatshirts as the wind had really cooled the temperature overnight so that for most of the day the temperature was 20 degrees cooler than the day before.
