Port Augusta to Penong: Crossing the Eyre Peninsula to Windmill Country
Morning Departure and Eyre Peninsula Journey
Our 8:45 am departure from Port Augusta after refuelling launched us across the vast Eyre Peninsula. A quick stop in Kimba broke up the drive before we settled into lunch at Wudinna’s rest area, home to the impressive Australian Farmer Granite Sculpture – a powerful tribute to the region’s pioneering farming families and their wheat and sheep legacy.
Ceduna and Evening Arrival
Continuing through Ceduna, we reached Penong around 4:30 pm, checking into a cozy caravan park in this quirky little town perched on the Nullarbor’s edge. Penong’s claim to fame? Its collection of eccentric windmills, including “Bruce” – Australia’s biggest windmill, conveniently located directly opposite our accommodation.
Evening Photo Session and Spontaneous Display
The early evening light proved irresistible for capturing Bubsie alongside Penong’s famous windmills. What began as a photo session naturally evolved into an impromptu display for curious caravan park guests drawn to the vintage beauty.
Serendipitous Book Connection
One couple’s story perfectly illustrated how far Bubsie’s reach extends – they’d discovered an Overlander book in a Coffin Bay exchange library and were thrilled to meet the famous car in person. These unexpected connections always remind us how stories travel through communities.
Preparation for the Days Ahead
While the evening remained pleasant, we took advantage of the quiet time to insert brochures into recently acquired books, preparing materials for upcoming displays. Even rest days involve some behind-the-scenes preparation work.
