Church display – Frankston VIC
Our display today was scheduled for a slightly later start time compared to some of our previous events, allowing for a more relaxed morning before heading west to Frankston. The original plan had been to set up the display in a Frankston shopping mall, but the local council had rescinded the permit the previous Friday, citing concerns about the religious nature of the event. This was disappointing for the organizing church, who had been preparing for the display.
However, we suggested an alternative location on the church property, which had good visibility from both foot and vehicle traffic. The pastor, Jonathan Newlands, was receptive to this idea and had already begun advertising the event to the local community. They had also conducted several other events at the property over the past week, including the official opening of a new community center the day before.
As we arrived, the church members were busy decorating the area with balloons, so we quickly unloaded and positioned the vehicle for maximum visibility from the nearby road and foot traffic. We had a productive morning and afternoon, with people stopping to view the car and receive the informational materials.
We were pleased to connect with several members of local car clubs, including individuals who had personal connections to the original Citroën 5CV and the 1975 “Bubsie Too” circumnavigation event. One attendee even brought his own classic Chevrolet to share.
During a break in the display, we purchased some refreshments and assisted the church in setting up lighting to highlight the vehicle for the evening information session.
Overall, it was a successful day, with a steady flow of visitors interested in the car and the associated program. The church’s willingness to accommodate the display on their property, despite the initial setback, allowed us to engage with the community and share the story of the vehicle.
Wednesday: 9 April 7pm – 8:30pm
Information Evening – Frankston VIC
The evening information session began around 6:30 PM, with approximately 45-50 people in attendance. Several community members who had seen the vehicle earlier in the day returned, bringing additional guests.
During the event, we distributed 70 “Overlander” books and 10 “God’s Rescue Plan” books to the attendees. The church members had prepared refreshments for the participants to enjoy as they departed.
Many of the attendees took the opportunity for additional photos with the vehicle after hearing the story and learning more about the challenges faced by the original expedition team. We are grateful to the Frankston church and Pastor Newlands for their hospitality and support in making this a successful event.
The evening provided a valuable opportunity to engage with the local community, building on the interest generated by the earlier display. The combination of the vehicle exhibit and the informational session allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding of the historical journey and the associated program.
Overall, the event was well-received, with a good turnout and positive feedback from the attendees. The church’s preparation and assistance were instrumental in facilitating this engaging and informative experience for the community.
